Zubaidah Djohar

Zubaidah Djohar is a researcher, trainer, humanitarian activist and a poet. Born in Bukittinggi but she’s also famous in Aceh, as a poet. She has published on wide range of issues that seek to unpack the impacts of conflict on women in Aceh, Indonesia and on the role of women in contemporary society. She has worked for projects that seek to empower women, addressing cross-cutting themes of anti-corruption, gender equality, environmental sustainability, and peace building. In her book of poems on women and peace in Aceh, PULANG, Melawan Lupa, 2012 (English Version: Building a Boat in Paradise, translated by Heather Curnow, 2014), she raises the importance of remembering the violence and the sufferings of the conflict survivors, especially women and children, as a path towards reconciliation. She dedicates the revenues of her poetry books for the recovery of the conflict survivors.
