Peni Candra Rini is the daughter of a master puppeteer and one of few female contemporary composers/song writers/ and vocalists who performs sinden, a soloist-female style of gamelan singing. Strongly committed to preserving and sharing the musical traditions of her country, Peni has collaborated with acclaimed artists from within and outside Indonesia, including Robert Wilson (USA), Rahayu Supanggah (IND), Garin Nugroho (IND), Sardono W. Kusumo (IND), Iain Grandage with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (AUS), Jen Shyu (USA), Jessika Kenney (USA), CAGE Cornell Avant Garde Ensemble (USA), Ade Suharto (AUS), Neil Chua (SIN), Blessing Chimanga (ZIM), Philip Graulty (USA), Rodrigo Parejo (Spain), Anna & Elizabeth (USA), Andy Mc.Graw (USA), Gilles Saisi (France), Kamal Musallam (Dubai), as a OneBeat Fellows in 2014 (USA), and has collaborated with various gamelan groups from around the world.

She has performed at major festivals including Mascot SIPA Solo International Performing Arts 2016, ASIA TOPA 2017 & Holland Festival 2017 for Setan Java Movie, Shadow Ballads USA tour (2016), Setouchi Triennale Japan (2016), Makassar International Writers Festival (2016), The Ringling International Arts Festival (2015), Indonesia Creative Cities Conference (2015), CINARS Biennale 2014, Ubud Writers & Readers festival (2014), Womadelaide Festival 2014, OzAsia Festival (2013), Harare International Festival of the Arts (2008, 2011, 2012), World Festival of Sacred Music (2011), Lincoln Center White Light Festival (2011), Jeonju International Sori Festival, Korea (2012), APPEX Bali (2010). Peni has recorded 3 albums ‘Bramara’ (2010), ‘Sekar’ (2012) and ‘Bhumi’ (2015). In 2012, she completed an artist residency at the California Institute of the Arts with a grant from the Asian Cultural Council. During this time, Peni featured as a guest artist at 8 American universities and participated in master classes with vocal master Meredith Monk. In addition to her extensive work as a performer, Peni is also a lecturer at the Indonesian Arts Institute in Surakarta, Central Java.
